poor baxy
my poor little puppy has been acting a bit strange since he came home - a wee bit miserable and slightly disgruntled at times would probably be the best way to describe it. he was super happy to see me when i picked him up from the home sitter and couldn't get into the car fast enough but i thought maybe he was missing the little dog that he stayed with, missed the rough playing and companionship. i took him for a walk in the dog park and he had no interest in any of the other dogs so i started thinking maybe he is missing shane or is just a bit put out by all the changes around here lately. then i was having a bit of a play with him this afternoon and discovered that half of one his teeth is broken off! it's a front one, beside the canine and i was hoping that just the tip was broken off but on closer inspection it looks like it's broken a piece off diagonally and there is some pinkness exposed. i can only imagine how tender this tooth must be (although he doesn't mind me opening his mouth to look at it and has been eating fine) and it totally explains why he's been to sleepy/sulky for the past few days. i'll phone the vet first thing in the morning and take him in (i'm a little bit worried about how much it's going to cost to fix but that's all part of pet ownership).
now i'm just trying to figure out the how and when. i have a sinking feeling that it happened while he was with the carer and she just decided not to tell me. i did think things felt a bit weird when i picked him up - bax was so keen to get out of there and she didn't really give me any information about how his stay was or make any mention of him coming to stay in the future. maybe i'm reading too much into it but now i feel like she was nervous... plus baxter kept licking his lips and mouth the whole car ride home which was weird. i thought he was just thirsty and he did stop once he had some water at home. i just keep going over it all in my head, wondering how long the poor little fella has been uncomfortable and i'll be so angry if it happened while we were away and he's had to be in pain for 5 extra days because she didn't want to accept responsibility. it'll be interesting to see if the vet thinks that such a tooth break would bleed (as my internet research suggests, thanks google) because i haven't seen any blood around here or on baxter which would mean that it happened while he was with the dog sitter. i guess there is nothing i can do about it anyway but i'll be making a phone call, that's for sure.

aww poor little guy, i hope he's ok!
ReplyDeleteYour poor, sweet little dog. I hope he's ok after a trip to the vet. And I hope you get to the bottom of 'the incident'. He looks very content snuggled up to that gorgeous patchwork cushion.
ReplyDeleteAw poor boy :( I hope he is feeling better soon. chipping a tooth like that sounds so painful.
ReplyDelete** I'm not sure that I've ever commented over here before, but I've been reading your blog quite regularly for a bit now. It's very lovely and fun to stop by.
aww poor little guy! i wonder if you could give him a little clove oil to make it less uncomfortable for him.
ReplyDeletei totally understand the guilt of not figuring out what's wrong with your pet straight away. my little cat sunday once swallowed a sewing needle and it took me a couple of hours to figure out what had happened. i have no idea how she got the damn thing, but i still feel bad about it!
oh gosh...ald he's back with YOU! I would certainly be making a phone call the the dog sitter after you get some info from the vet. Hoping things go alright at the vets...unexpected bills are no fun.
ReplyDeletePoor guy! If you're right and she was hiding it she was probably doing so because f the vet bill it would ave cost her, although surely she should have some kind of insurance for that kind of thing?
ReplyDeleteI'd be calling her up after getting info from the vet and asking her politely if she noticed anything wrong with him while he was in her care, maybe she'll admit it. If not THEN let rip! :)
Good luck!
Poor pup! Get ready for the vet bill, our dog just came back from having some rotting teeth out and my husband nearly jumped in surprise at the final numbers. But what can you do? If it needs to be done, you just gotta grin and bear it. But I'd call the dog-sitter after the vet visit, too. Good luck!
ReplyDeletepoor baxy :(
ReplyDeleteI know what it's like to have a dog that's feeling out of sorts, it really brings out your protective side!
The dog sitter may not have been aware of the tooth though.
My Scout had somehow managed to break one of her front teeth ages ago. I had no idea how she did it or how long it had been like that (and I'm a reasonably attentive dog owner)
But I hope the vet can set him right again and he'll be fine.
Argh. Poor dog and poor you! It's really emotional when your dog is unwell. We have just gone through a scare with our dog and I could not believe how emotional I was! I also worried about how long my dog was potentially suffering, but the most important thing is that you have found the drama and can get it fixed (YES at a price!!) but it's worth it! It's so wonderful when you get them back all happy and healthy again!
ReplyDeletePoor puppy! In that photo he looks just like I feel when I have toothache! I hope he's better soon.
ReplyDeleteHope he is okay- I thought Bella had broken half a tooth but the vet said she just ground it down to where it fitted in with all her other teeth- I am too tight to get her doggie braces.
ReplyDeletePoor baby. I hope he feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteYes, i agree with phoning the caregiver and inquiring about what she knows about his tooth! Poor poor Baxie!!! I hope he will pain free soon! And i hope it doesn't cost an arm and a leg!
ReplyDeleteGet better soon dear Bax!
I'm sorry to read Baxy is not feeling well.I got so scared when I read the title of the post. Please keep us posted. I hope Baxy gets better soon. He's such a cutie!!

I have a dachshund that broke a tooth too! She had to have it pulled and once out she was back to her old self. That picture just about sums it up….. tired and hurting. I sure hope he's better soon.
